Entrepreneuring Youth to Host High School Students from Turkey

Friday, November 19, 2010 - 8:30am

A group of five female high school students from Turkey will be visiting Pittsburgh on Friday, Nov. 19, from 8:30-11:00 a.m. at the Rivers Club in the Grant Room. These students, who are studying Attire Production Technology/Design of Women's Wear at a girls’ technical vocational school in a less developed region in Istanbul, are the winners of Junior Achievement in Turkey’s Youth Innovation and Entrepreneurship (YIEP) Program arranged by Junior Achievement in Turkey.

For this annual competition in Istanbul, the students formed a company, the Krizantem Junior Achievement Company, and created a thin scarf made of Sile Cloth, a special regional fabric. This scarf is an accessory to combine with one’s clothes, use as a necklace or bracelet, decorate one’s hair, or wear as a belt. All the products have decorative boxes and a different design.

Entrepreneuring Youth (E-Youth), which sponsors the annual George W. Tippins Annual Youth Entrepreneur Business Plan competition in Pittsburgh, will present a special opportunity for the visitors to exchange views on the challenges of business creation and ownership with entrepreneurship students in their program at McKeesport Area High School.

According to Jerry Cozewith, ”While the visit will require the presence of an interpreter, I fully expect the flow of ideas and advice between these entrepreneurially minded young people will be quite spontaneous and an awesome experience, they will never forget. The global economy and Greater Pittsburgh is now a hyphenated phrase and our students are getting an introduction to the power of this idea much earlier than current adult leaders ever had. This is really a tribute to the inventiveness and dedication of our partner-teacher, Ms. Kimberly Rose."

Rose, Teacher of Entrepreneurship and Business at McKeesport High School, was E-Youth's Teacher of the Year in 2010. Two of Rose’s students were the first place finishers in the George W. Tippins Annual Business Plan competition earlier this year.

This will be the first visit to the United States for these Turkish students. They will be accompanied by a representative of Junior Achievement from Turkey, and by one of their teachers who supported them during the contest.
